A UNIQUE IDENTITY- India in elite club as rupee gets a symbol

A UNIQUE IDENTITY
India in elite club as rupee gets a symbol

New Delhi: In keeping with India's growing economic might and its status as a major investment destination, the hitherto humble rupee is all set to get a distinct identity in the form of a new symbol. The Union Cabinet on Thursday gave its approval to the symbol which combines the Roman letter 'R' with the Devanagri 'Ra'.
The symbol has been designed by D Udaya Kumar, a Mumbai IIT post-graduate, who has just joined as a teacher at IIT Guwahati. Kumar will receive a prize money of Rs 2.5 lakh for his efforts.
The symbol will standardize the expression for the Indian rupee in different languages, both within and outside the country.
The symbol will catapult the rupee into the company of socalled elite currencies of the world which have similarly distinct identities like the US dollar, euro, Japanese yen and British pound. "It's a big statement on the Indian currency. It would distinguish the Indian currency from those countries whose currencies are also designated as rupee or rupiah, such as Pakistan, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Indonesia,'' I&B minister Ambika Soni said after the Cabinet meeting. The symbol, she added, would reflect the strength and robustness of the Indian economy.
Till now, the Indian currency was simply denoted by Rs or INR. Kumar's symbol was chosen after a public competition was held among resident Indian citizens inviting entries for a symbol which "reflects and captures the Indian ethos and culture''.
Over 3,000 entries were received. These were evaluated by a jury headed by the RBI deputy governor, which included experts from reputed art and design institutes.
"The entries were presented to the jury in such a manner that the identity of the competitors was not revealed to the jury members. The jury selected five final entries and also gave its evaluation of these five entries to the government to take a final decision,'' said Soni.
Though the symbol will not be printed or embossed on currency notes or coins, it would be included in the 'Unicode Standard' and major scripts of the world to ensure that it is easily displayed and printed in the electronic and print media. Unicode is an international standard that allows text data to be interchanged globally without conflict. After incorporation in the global and Indian codes, the symbol will be used by all individuals and entities within and outside the country.
The symbol will be adopted in a span of six months in the country, and within 18 to 24 months globally, Soni said, adding that it will feature on computer keyboards and softwares for worldwide use.
"It is a perfect blend of Indian and Roman letters — capital 'R' and Devanagri 'Ra' which represents rupaiah — to appeal to international and Indian audiences. My design is based on the tricolour, with two lines at the top and white space in between,'' Kumar said.
After encoding of the symbol in the Unicode Standard and National Standard, NASSCOM will approach software development companies for incorporating the rupee symbol in their operative software, as a new programme or as an update, to enable computer users worldwide to use the symbol even if it is not embedded on the keyboards (much like the way Euro symbol is used even though it is not embedded in the keyboards in use in India).

PSLV launch successful, 5 satellites placed in orbit

PSLV_200

Sriharikota: In a textbook launch, India's Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) on Monday successfully placed into orbit remote sensing satellite Cartosat-2B and four other satellites after a perfect lift off from the spaceport here.

At the end of an over 51-hour countdown, the 44.4 metre-tall four-stage PSLV-C-15, costing Rs 260 crore, blasted off from a launch pad at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre with ignition of the core first stage and placed the satellites in orbit one after the other.

Visibly relieved scientists, headed by ISRO chairman Dr K Radhakrishnan, cheered as ISRO's workhorse PSLV soared into clear skies at 9.22 AM from the spaceport in the East Coast in Andhra Pradesh, about 100 km north of Chennai.

India hopes to launch 'Chandrayaan-2' by 2013

The PSLV launch assumes significance as it comes about three months after ISRO suffered a major setback on April 15 when the Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV-D3), which was launched using an Indian-designed and built cryogenic engine for the first time, failed and fell into the Bay of Bengal.

Cartosat-2B is an advanced remote sensing satellite built by ISRO. This is the latest in the Indian remote sensing satellite series and the 17th in this series.

Cartosat-2B is mainly intended to augment remote sensing data services to the users of multiple spot scene imagery with 0.8 metre spatial resolution and 9.6 km swath in the panchromatic.

Cartosat-2 and 2A, two Indian remote sensing satellites in orbit, are currently providing such services.

A set of four satellites including Studsat built by students of seven engineering colleges in Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka, Alsat from Algeria, two nano satellites from Canada and Switzerland, and a pico (very small) satellite called Oceansat 2 accompanied Cartosat 2 on its trip to orbit.

Planning Commission Deputy Chairman Montek Singh Ahuluwalia, and former ISRO chief Dr K Kasturirangan witnessed the launch.

"It has been a wonderful experience. The ISRO has made the country proud," Ahluwalia said, congratulating the scientists after the perfect take off.

Attributing the success of PSLV C-15 to the entire team behind the mission, ISRO chairman K Radhakrishnan said, "We had an excellent flight. It injected precisely the five satellites. The entire ISRO team is behind the success".

In an apparent reference to the failure of GSLV D3 cryogenic stage, the space agency's first mission after he took over as its chief, he said his team of scientists were inspired to work "especially after the last few weeks after a serious problem that we faced."

GSLV relaunch with indigenous cryogenic engine in one year

"And I also want to say we have understood the problem with regard to the indigenous cryogenic engine and stage. We will confirm it in a few weeks with a few tests and then we will come back", he said.

Curriculum Vitae vs. Resume?

Question: Curriculum Vitae vs. Resume?
What is the difference between a curriculum vitae (CV) and a resume?
Answer: The primary differences between a resume and a curriculum vitae (CV) are the length, what is included and what each is used for. A resume is a one or two page summary of your skills, experience and education. While a resume is brief and concise - no more than a page or two, a Curriculum Vitae is a longer (at least two page) and more detailed synopsis.

A Curriculum Vitae includes a summary of your educational and academic backgrounds as well as teaching and research experience, publications, presentations, awards, honors, affiliations and other details. In Europe, the Middle East, Africa, or Asia, employers may expect to receive a curriculum vitae.

In the United States, a curriculum vitae is used primarily when applying for academic, education, scientific or research positions. It is also applicable when applying for fellowships or grants.

ANSWERS FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ON GMAT'S NEW FORMAT

ANSWERS FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ON GMAT'S NEW FORMAT

What are the fundamental changes in the new format of Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT)?
The major change will be the addition of an innovative new section that measures the test-taker's ability to assimilate information from multiple sources, such as charts, graphs and spreadsheets. This new 'integrated reasoning'section will replace one of two essay questions that are part of the current test. It will not change the verbal and quantitative sections, and it will be scored separately, as the essays are currently scored.
Why was it decided to include integrated reasoning?
We constantly review all elements of the GMAT exam to ensure that we are meeting the needs of business schools around the world. The GMAT exam is designed by business schools for business schools, and this change of format reflects the changing needs identified by business schools. For the past four years, we have conducted multiple surveys of business school faculty from around the world as part of our commitment to continuous improvement of
the exam. These surveys included faculty from Indian business schools. We asked for information about newer skills that need to be measured for success in graduate management education. The new section responds to that input.
The GMAT has been on a path of continuous evolution since its launch in 1954.We added data sufficiency in 1961 and dropped analogies and antonyms in 1976 as they were too easily coached and provided the schools with no valuable information. As business schools evolve their curricula to meet the needs of the marketplace, the skills that the GMAT measures will continue to evolve

as well. The addition of the integrated reasoning section reflects the needs of the marketplace.
Why is assimilating data from multiple sources becoming important these days?
The integrated reasoning section is a microcosm of what is happening in business school classrooms today. The new section will help business school faculty and administrators gain critical information about a student's ability to make sound decisions by evaluat
ing data from multiple and diverse sources.
How will integrated reasoning help one later in real-life situations?
Today's global marketplace demands business leaders who are skilled in pulling together a wide array of resources, analysing and evaluating this diverse data, drawing conclusions and creating solutions - often on short notice.
How should students go about preparing for the new format of GMAT?
Students can find regular updates about the next generation GMAT on www.mba.com The GMAT website will continue to offer up-todate information as we proceed to develop the next generation GMAT, including preparation materials. The new integrated reasoning section will be 30 minutes in duration and will replace one essay of equal length. As a result, the new exam will include just one 30-minute essay question.Tests will continue to be scored on a 200-800 scale. Testtakers will receive a separate score for the essay - as they do now - and another separate score for the integrated reasoning section. We have already done some initial pilot testing and have made changes based on that testing. We will be conducting a second pilot test involving about 3,000 testtakers internationally in November
