University of Hyderabad-Biotechnology M.Sc, Ph.D Entrance Exams
Department of Biotechnology of University of Hyderabad is the most reputed among its peers in the country. The HCU offer M.Sc, M.Tech, Integrated M.Sc and Ph.D Programmes in Biotechnology and Bioinformatics through the Department of Biotechnology. The department conducts entrance exams for all the programmes separately and short lists candidates for Ph.D based on CSIR - UGC, ICMR, DBT and other fellowship tests. The major research areas are biophysics, stem cell therapy, biology of HIV, HCV, molecular therapeutics, molecular aspects of neurochemistry, dengue and chukun gunia viruses and cancer, molecular insights into adaptation of chronic pathogens and functional genomics and neurodegenerative diseases. Following are details of programmes of study, eligibility, entrance test structure and scheme, model papers and application procedure:
1) M.Sc. Biotechnology: Duration of the programme is 2 years. The programme is supervised by DBT, Govt. of India in all respects. Students will get an opportunity to visit biotech industries to learn various aspects of product development. Selection of the candidates is based on National Entrance Test conducted by the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), New Delhi for Biotechnology admissions. 2) M. Tech. Bioinformatics: The programme is sponsored by UGC and approved by AICTE. M.Tech Bioinformatics is an advanced course with excellent infrastructure, course design and training. The students of the course are getting good placements from software and bioinformatics companies. Selection of the candidate for this programme is based on GATE scores. There are some seats for Non Biotechnology background candidates. The admission is based on the performance in an interview consists of questions from Computer Sciences, Physical Sciences, Mathematical Sciences and Biological Sciences.
3) Integrated M.Sc.- Ph.D. Biotechnology: Duration of this course is 4 years. In the first two years, candidates will be involved in extensive course work and later will be continued for the Ph.D. degree. If the candidate's performance is not up to the mark in initial two years they will be discontinued from the programme with degree in M.Sc Biotechnology. Admission to this innovative and rigorous programme is based on an entrance examination and interview. The Entrance test question paper will carry 75 objective type questions for 75 marks. The questions will be at degree standard and will be from Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology and quantitative aptitude. Interview will be for 25 marks.
4) Ph.D Biotechnology: Duration is 3 years. There will be a course work in the initial two semesters. Admission will be based on an entrance examination and interview to be conducted by the University. Candidates those qualified in CSIR - UGC NET examination for JRF OR exams of ICMR or DBT will be exempted from entrance examination. They need to appeat for interviews. The question paper for the Ph.D. Entrance exam contains 75 objective type questions for 75 marks and questions will be of M.Sc standard from the topics of Biotechnology and Bioinformatics. Those qualified in written examination will be short listed for an interview, which will be for 25 marks. Candidates can obtain previous papers of entrance exams from university library or from website www.uohyd.info or www.uohyd.ernet.in .
